Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9, two Wear OS smartwatches built around continuous health tracking but aimed at very different lifestyles. The Ultra2 is the rugged option for endurance sports, trail running, and diving, while the Watch9 focuses on everyday wellness and a lighter design that should be easier to wear around the clock.
Both watches use the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, Samsung’s BioActive Sensor, Wear OS 7, and One UI 9 Watch. They also share AI-powered features covering sleep, cardiovascular wellness, exercise load, recovery, fitness, and hearing protection. The main differences come down to durability, battery capacity, display brightness, storage, size, and specialized sports tools.
Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Targets Extreme Activities
The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is designed for users who spend more time on trails, in open water, or training outdoors. Its new Trail Run mode records elevation, climbing progress, and the effect of changing terrain. Nutrition Alert works alongside Samsung’s Sweat Loss feature to estimate hydration needs based on sweat loss relative to body weight.
Diving support is another major difference. The Ultra2 carries 10 ATM, IP69K, and EN13319 ratings, allowing it to record depth, dive duration, and water temperature automatically. A dedicated Diving app developed with Mares is expected later in 2026, adding information such as ascent speed, descent speed, and safe dive limits.
The rugged titanium case remains, but Samsung has reworked the internal structure to reduce thickness by 12 percent compared with the previous Ultra generation. It weighs 61.5 grams and comes exclusively in a 47 mm case, so it is still a substantial watch despite the slimmer profile.
Watch9 Focuses on Daily Comfort
Galaxy Watch9 drops the extreme-sports hardware in favor of a smaller, lighter aluminum body. It retains Samsung’s cushion-shaped case while sitting closer to the wrist, which may improve both comfort and sensor contact during sleep or extended activity tracking.
Users can choose between 40 mm and 44 mm models. The smaller version weighs 31.5 grams, while the 44 mm model weighs 34 grams. That makes either Watch9 noticeably lighter than the Ultra2 and potentially better suited to users who dislike wearing a bulky smartwatch overnight.
The two Watch9 sizes also use different screens and batteries. The 40 mm model has a 1.34-inch display and a 390 mAh battery, while the 44 mm version increases those figures to 1.47 inches and 445 mAh. Both use Sapphire Crystal, Super AMOLED panels with always-on functionality and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits.
Battery, Display, and Hardware Differences
The Ultra2 has the clear hardware advantage. Its 800 mAh battery is 35 percent larger than the battery in the previous Galaxy Watch Ultra. The 1.52-inch AMOLED display reaches a localized peak brightness of 5,000 nits, compared with 3,000 nits on the Watch9. That extra brightness should make maps and workout data easier to check under intense sunlight.
Both models use the Qualcomm SDW6100 penta-core processor manufactured on a 3 nm process, paired with 2 GB of memory. However, the Ultra2 includes 64 GB storage, double the 32 GB available on the Watch9. Connectivity is consistent across the range, including LTE, Bluetooth 6.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, and dual-frequency L1 plus L5 GPS.
Durability is where the product positioning becomes obvious. Galaxy Watch Ultra2 combines 10 ATM water resistance with IP69K and diving certification. Galaxy Watch9 provides 5 ATM and IP68 protection, which is appropriate for daily exercise and swimming but does not give it the Ultra2’s dedicated diving credentials.
Shared AI Health Features and Availability
Despite their hardware differences, both watches deliver the same core AI health experience. Vitals monitors a personal baseline during sleep and can flag meaningful deviations. Heart Health Score summarizes cardiovascular wellness, while Daily Cardio Load evaluates training volume and estimated recovery requirements.
Fitness Index combines activity records, step data, body composition analysis, and VO2 Max measurements to provide a broader view of physical fitness. The watches can also monitor unsafe environmental noise levels, examine breathing disruptions associated with sleep apnea, and turn sensor data into more accessible recommendations. These features are wellness tools and should not replace professional medical diagnosis or treatment.
The Ultra2 can be paired with Marine, PeakForm, or Trail bands depending on the activity. Galaxy Watch9 supports Sports, Misty, and Fabric bands, with the Fabric option intended to remain comfortable during sleep. Both watches also include access to a 60-day Strava trial in supported regions.
Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is offered in Titanium Silver and Titanium Grey, while Galaxy Watch9 comes in size-dependent Graphite, Silver, and Cream finishes. Pre-orders opened in Canada on July 22, 2026, followed by general availability on August 7. Samsung did not disclose standalone pricing in the announcement, although a limited Canadian bundle promotion offers 10 percent off either watch with selected Q8, H8, or B8 purchases.
