Cosmo School-Fi Makes Kids Smartwatches School Ready

Cosmo has introduced School-Fi, a new geolocation-based feature designed to make kids smartwatches less distracting during school hours. Built for the company’s JrTrack wearable lineup, the system automatically recognizes when a child enters or leaves a school campus, then adjusts notifications and device functions based on settings selected by parents.

The idea targets a growing problem for families and educators. Schools increasingly want students to avoid smartphones in class, while parents still want a reliable way to communicate with their children during emergencies. School-Fi attempts to create a middle ground by keeping essential family communication available without turning a kids smartwatch into another source of classroom distraction.

Automatic School Detection With HaloGPS

School-Fi uses Cosmo’s HaloGPS technology to identify school locations rather than relying only on fixed schedules. According to the company, the system includes preset geofences around public schools across the United States. When a compatible device enters one of these areas, it can automatically switch into a school-focused configuration.

This location-aware approach could be more practical than a standard focus mode. Traditional settings may remain active during holidays, schedule changes, or early dismissals unless parents remember to update them. School-Fi instead responds to the child’s physical location, reducing the need for repeated manual adjustments inside the parent app.

Parents Control Which Features Stay Active

The system does not completely disable the smartwatch. Parents can use the School Routines section of the Cosmo app to decide which safety features and communication tools remain available during school hours. Calling, messaging, GPS tracking, and notifications can be configured to match family preferences and school policies.

When school mode is active, the device can function more like a basic watch and safety accessory than a full smart device. This allows children to check the time or access approved communication options without receiving unnecessary alerts. The configuration also helps educators by reducing the temptation to interact with apps or messages during lessons.

JrTrack 5 SE Adds a Backpack Clip Option

School-Fi launches alongside the JrTrack 5 SE, a new kids smartwatch that supports calling, messaging, GPS tracking, parent-approved contacts, and customizable parental controls. The device is intended for families that want to delay giving children a conventional smartphone while still providing a direct communication channel.

The JrTrack 5 SE also works with the School Explorer Clip accessory. Parents can remove the wristbands, place the watch body inside a silicone case, and attach it to a backpack. This setup may help families comply with schools that require connected devices to remain stored away during the day rather than worn on the wrist.

A Different Approach to School Phone Restrictions

School-Fi reflects a broader shift toward devices designed specifically for children instead of simplified versions of adult smartphones. Its automatic geofencing, controlled contacts, and configurable notifications are meant to balance student focus with the ability to reach family members when necessary.

The feature will launch in late July through the updated Cosmo app and will be available on the JrTrack 5 SE. Existing JrTrack 5 users will also gain access to School Routines through the new app experience. The JrTrack 5 SE is priced at $129.99, with membership plans starting at $19.99 per month or an equivalent of $9.99 per month with a two-year prepaid plan. It will be sold through the company’s website and Amazon. With School-Fi, Cosmo is positioning its smartwatch platform as a practical alternative for families navigating stricter school phone policies.
