Electronic Arts and Bit Reactor have released Star Wars Zero Company, a single-player turn-based tactics game set near the end of the Clone Wars. Developed with Lucasfilm Games, the title follows a squad of unconventional operatives rather than the Jedi-led armies usually placed at the center of Star Wars stories.
A New Story From the Darker Side of the Clone Wars
Players command Zero Company, a team recruited by Republic Intelligence and led by Hawks, a former Republic officer. Its mission is to stop the Infinite Coil, a Separatist-aligned cult controlled by Kundri Fathom, before a threat called the Shadow Plague spreads across the galaxy.
The setup creates room for a more focused military story involving covert operations, investigations, and tactical missions. Its mix of ex-nobles, former criminals, and other hired specialists also gives the campaign a different perspective from stories centered on established Star Wars heroes.
Turn-Based Combat Built Around Squad Synergy
The core gameplay uses turn-based tactical combat, requiring players to position squad members, combine abilities, and adapt their plans to each encounter. Relationships between operatives are not limited to story development: stronger bonds can unlock combat synergies capable of changing how the team functions in battle.
This system should appeal to players who enjoy planning several moves ahead rather than relying on fast reflexes. However, anyone expecting real-time lightsaber combat or a large open-world adventure should note that Zero Company is structured around deliberate tactical decisions and a single-player campaign.
Build Hawks and Customize Zero Company
Hawks can be customized through appearance options and a selectable combat specialization. Players can then assemble the rest of the squad from original characters and custom-made Star Wars operatives, adjusting their appearances, equipment loadouts, and abilities.
These choices allow the same mission to support different team configurations. A player might prioritize specialized roles and coordinated abilities, while another may create a more flexible squad able to respond to varied battlefield conditions. The press release does not specify the number of recruitable characters or the full range of available classes, so the depth of long-term squad development cannot be measured from the launch information alone.
The Den Adds a Strategic Layer Between Missions
Decision-making continues at The Den, Zero Company’s base of operations. Bit Reactor says players will need to strategize and adapt both at the base and on the battlefield, suggesting that preparation, squad development, and mission choices form part of the wider campaign loop.
The studio includes developers with experience across strategy franchises such as XCOM and Civilization, although Zero Company is its debut release. The cinematic presentation may make the tactics genre more approachable to Star Wars fans, while the squad systems and turn-based structure target players who want more control than a conventional action game provides.
Star Wars Zero Company is available on PC through the EA app, Steam, and Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. The Digital Deluxe Edition costs $59.99 on PC and $69.99 on consoles, adding Clone Wars-inspired cosmetic items. A $299.99 Collector’s Edition includes physical extras such as a Hasbro Black Series Thermal Detonator, Steelbook, and desk mat. The launch also includes an original soundtrack composed by Gordy Haab, according to Electronic Arts.
