A new consumer study from the company suggests that generic “start small” advice may not give first-time buyers enough information, leading Lovense to introduce an Anal Toy Size Guide built around dimensions, experience levels, and anatomy.

Why “Start Small” Is Not Specific Enough

Beginner guides commonly recommend starting with a smaller product, but “small” can mean very different things depending on the manufacturer and product design. Lovense argues that buyers need measurable dimensions rather than broad labels if they are going to understand how one device compares with another. The company’s research found that 32% of beginners considered size and shape the single most important factor when making a purchase.

The survey also highlights how shoppers currently deal with that uncertainty. Among first-time buyers, 38% simply selected a product described as small or beginner-friendly, while 25% relied on recommendations from other people. Another 17% purchased a set containing multiple sizes, effectively turning product selection into trial and error rather than making the decision from clear sizing information beforehand.

Survey Highlights a Personalization Gap

The more interesting numbers come from buyers who later believed they had selected the wrong size. According to the study, 39% blamed a lack of personalized sizing recommendations, while 28% said the available product information was not intuitive enough. Another 22% discovered that other people’s recommendations did not necessarily translate to their own body or preferences.

That problem is familiar elsewhere in consumer tech. Wearables need different strap sizes, earbuds come with multiple tips, and smart rings increasingly use dedicated sizing kits. Intimate technology has similar fit-dependent hardware considerations, but product descriptions have traditionally offered fewer tools for translating numerical measurements into something a shopper can easily visualize and compare.

A More Visual Way to Understand Dimensions

Lovense’s guide tries to solve this by organizing products including Lush Anal, Hush 2, Edge 2, and Ridge into Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert experience tiers. Instead of presenting measurements alone, the guide also uses familiar everyday objects as visual references for width, helping shoppers understand physical dimensions without having to mentally convert numbers into real-world scale.
