Timekettle introduced the W4 Plus AI Interpreter Earbuds at IFA 2026 as an expanded version of its original W4 platform. Rather than functioning like conventional music earbuds with translation added on, the device is built around multilingual communication across face-to-face conversations, phone calls, meetings, and digital media. Its most significant upgrades are Babel OS 3.0, improved voice capture, and AI tools designed to retain context during longer discussions.
Four Translation Modes in One Device
The W4 Plus covers four distinct scenarios. One-on-One Translation lets two people wear one earbud each for simultaneous two-way communication. Listen & Play targets conferences, lectures, guided tours, and presentations, adding audio recording, transcription, and AI-assisted review.
Voice Call Translation handles two-way interpretation during phone calls, video calls, and online meetings on services including Zoom, WhatsApp, WeChat, and Telegram. The remote participant does not need separate hardware or an app, while the user can follow bilingual transcripts on a connected phone. Multi-Media Translation extends the same concept to YouTube, Netflix, social media, and other audio or video content, with synchronized translated subtitles.
AI Features Look Beyond Individual Sentences
Babel OS 3.0 supports 52 online languages and 106 accents, plus 13 offline language pairs. The system selects a translation engine according to the language pair and can move between online and offline processing. However, the release does not identify which language combinations are available offline, so travelers should verify support for their intended destination before relying on that mode.
AI Specialized Translation provides profiles for general conversation, technology and internet topics, manufacturing, green technology, and biotech or pharmaceutical discussions. These selectable profiles could be useful when ordinary translation systems struggle with industry terminology. AI Conversation Memory is intended to keep wording and meaning consistent over extended discussions, while AI Live Summary turns saved meetings into condensed notes and takeaways.
The AI Lab also includes a personal glossary, adjustable translation styles, and an AI Speaking Coach for interview, meeting, and travel practice. These tools make the W4 Plus relevant to business users and language learners, although access to additional AI and translation functions may require the optional Unlimited Plan.
VoiceFocus Targets Difficult Speaking Environments
Accurate interpretation depends on capturing the speaker clearly before translation begins. The W4 Plus combines a bone-conduction voiceprint sensor, dual microphones, and the VoiceFocus noise-reduction algorithm. According to the manufacturer, low-volume voice pickup improves by 32% to 47% compared with the original W4.
That upgrade should matter at airports, exhibitions, and conferences where surrounding conversations can interfere with speech recognition. It may also help users speak more naturally in quiet settings instead of raising their voices. Still, the announced improvement concerns voice pickup rather than an independently measured gain in translation accuracy.
Portable Design, Battery Life, and Intended Users
Each semi-in-ear earbud weighs 5.7 g, while the earbuds and charging case weigh 116.5 g together. Continuous translation lasts more than three hours per charge, with the case extending total translation time to 12 hours. Music playback reaches up to 18 hours, although translation is clearly the central use case.
The W4 Plus is best suited to international travelers, multilingual teams, conference attendees, and users who regularly consume foreign-language media. Its ability to cover physical conversations and remote communication with one device is the key advantage, while the three-hour continuous translation figure may require charging breaks during long events.
Sales begin September 6, 2026, through Timekettle and Amazon. The full-feature model costs $379, while the Subscription Version costs $299. An Unlimited Plan offering additional AI and translation features is priced at $14.99 per month.
