Sony ULT TOWER MAX vs 7 vs 5: Key Differences

Sony Electronics has expanded its ULT POWER SOUND range with three party speakers aimed at distinctly different event sizes. The ULT TOWER MAX, ULT TOWER 7, and ULT TOWER 5 share bass-focused tuning, lighting, DJ connectivity, and karaoke features, but differ substantially in output design, portability, battery operation, and price.

The speakers were co-created with hip-hop producers and audio professionals, including Dot Da Genius, Daru Jones, Dready, and Dennis “ROC.am” Jones. Their feedback reportedly influenced the low-frequency response, vocal clarity, and overall impact. That collaboration provides useful context, although real-world performance will still depend on room size, placement, and listening volume.

ULT TOWER MAX Targets Large Events

The ULT TOWER MAX sits at the top of the range and is positioned for larger parties, event spaces, and more demanding DJ setups. It uses three woofers: two facing forward and another facing backward. These work alongside four tweeters and mid-range drivers to distribute powerful bass and clearer vocals around the venue.

It also supports 360-degree Party Sound, giving it an advantage when guests are spread throughout a room rather than seated directly in front of the speaker. Sony combines this driver arrangement with a large cabinet, ULT DUCT, and a high-powered amplifier to increase low-frequency output and sound pressure.

Built-in wheels with wider treads and integrated handles help users move the speaker, but its large-event focus means it is unlikely to be the most convenient model for frequent casual transport. Sony has not stated a battery runtime or IPX4 rating for the MAX, so buyers requiring cordless outdoor operation should consider those omissions when comparing it with the smaller models.

ULT TOWER 7 Offers the Broadest Balance

The ULT TOWER 7 retains 360-degree Party Sound while moving into a more portable category. It is designed to fill a room with bass and high sound pressure without requiring the MAX model’s three-woofer configuration. This makes it the likely middle ground for home parties, dance sessions, and medium-sized events.

Its battery can provide up to 30 hours of playback under Sony’s specified test conditions, with ULT mode enabled, volume set to 17, and lighting switched off. Actual endurance can change with volume, music, ambient temperature, lighting, and other functions.

The TOWER 7 also has wider-tread wheels, a carrying handle, and an IPX4 rating when standing vertically with its port cover properly closed. IPX4 protection is useful around splashes or light outdoor exposure, but it does not make the speaker waterproof or suitable for submersion. At $649.99, it costs less than half the price of the MAX while preserving several of its major room-filling and mobility features.

ULT TOWER 5 Prioritizes Compact Portability

The ULT TOWER 5 is intended for smaller gatherings and users who value easier transport over maximum coverage. Sony describes it as delivering substantial bass and sound pressure from a compact cabinet, aided by the same circular woofer, large cabinet volume, and ULT DUCT approach used across the new generation.

Battery life reaches up to 20 hours under Sony’s stated conditions, including ULT mode, volume level 16, and disabled lighting. Like the TOWER 7, it carries an IPX4 rating only while positioned vertically and with the waterproof port cover closed.

The main limitation is that Sony only lists 360-degree Party Sound for the MAX and TOWER 7. The TOWER 5 is therefore better suited to more focused listening areas than broad venue coverage. However, it maintains DJ inputs and karaoke features at the lowest price in the lineup, making it more approachable for home use and occasional events.

Shared Sound Modes, Connectivity, and Party Tools

All three models include an ULT button with ULT1 and ULT2 profiles. ULT1 emphasizes deeper low frequencies, while ULT2 adds stronger bass and sound pressure. FLAT targets a more neutral presentation, and LIVE creates a wider performance-like effect while maintaining vocal presence. Users can further adjust the sound through Custom EQ in the Sony | Sound Connect app.

The lineup offers XLR, RCA, and USB-C connectivity for party playback, DJ equipment, and other sources, although Sony has not provided a complete model-by-model port breakdown in the announcement. An optional ULTMIC1 microphone supports karaoke, while compatible speakers can be grouped through Auracast-based Party Chain to synchronize audio and lighting. Compatible pairs can also operate in stereo.

Three lighting modes provide different visual treatments: BEAT follows the music’s rhythm, WAVE creates more dynamic ambient movement, and MELLOW uses slower patterns. Enhanced Sound Field Optimization analyzes speaker placement and surrounding noise, then adjusts the balance across the frequency range. Each speaker can also operate vertically or horizontally, although the IPX4 protection on the two smaller models only applies in vertical orientation.

The ULT TOWER MAX, TOWER 7, and TOWER 5 will be available from September 2026 for $1,499.99, $649.99, and $449.99 respectively. Canadian pricing is $2,099, $799.99, and $599.99. The MAX is the specialized option for maximum venue impact, the TOWER 7 provides the strongest balance of coverage and portability, and the TOWER 5 suits smaller parties and tighter budgets. Around 35% of the MAX’s body plastic and 20% of each smaller model’s plastic is recycled material by weight, excluding packaging and manuals, according to Sony Electronics.
