Garmin Approach Z10 Adds Smarter Golf Ranging

Garmin has introduced the Approach Z10, a compact laser rangefinder designed to make distance checking faster and more informative on the golf course. It can measure the distance to a pin up to 350 yards away with accuracy within one yard, while its six-times magnification helps golfers identify targets clearly from a distance.

Weighing less than 7 ounces, the device is smaller and lighter than many smartphones. However, its real differentiator is not simply its portable body. The rangefinder can share measurement data with compatible Garmin smartwatches, golf handhelds and the Garmin Golf smartphone app, turning a basic laser reading into a more complete view of the upcoming shot.

Range Relay Expands the Distance Data

The built-in Range Relay feature sends the measured yardage directly to a paired device. After the rangefinder locks onto the pin, the connected screen can display a laser range arc showing other relevant course features at approximately the same distance. Golfers can also see measurements to the front and back of the green, making it easier to understand the pin position before selecting a club.

These synced measurements remain dynamic as the golfer moves closer to the target. Instead of ranging the same pin again before every shot, the distance shown on the compatible device automatically adjusts according to the player’s current position. Vibrational feedback confirms when the laser has successfully locked onto its target.

Elevation Adjustments and Tournament Mode

Approach Z10 includes PlaysLike distance, which adjusts the displayed yardage to account for elevation changes. An uphill target may effectively play longer, while a downhill shot may require less club. The adjusted result appears through the viewfinder, providing immediate context without requiring the golfer to calculate the elevation difference manually.

For competitive play, Garmin has included a dedicated tournament mode. An external indicator light shows other players that the rangefinder is operating with only tournament-compliant information. This visible status makes it easier to confirm that elevation-adjusted assistance has been disabled when course or event rules require it.

Designed for Practical Use on the Course

An included magnetic mount allows the rangefinder to be attached to a golf cart for quick access between shots. Because small golf accessories can easily be left behind, the Find My Rangefinder function records the device’s last known location when it is paired with the Garmin Golf app.

Battery life is rated for up to one year, reducing the need for frequent replacement during the playing season. The compact dimensions, low weight and long operating time make the Z10 suitable for golfers who want a dedicated laser without adding significant bulk to their bag.

A Garmin Golf membership adds Green Contour Data for supported courses, showing the direction of slopes across the putting surface. It also provides high-resolution aerial imagery for more than 43,000 courses worldwide. Membership costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, although the core ranging functions do not depend on the subscription.

A Connected Alternative to a Basic Rangefinder

The Approach Z10 combines a conventional laser measurement tool with the broader course information available through Garmin’s connected golf ecosystem. Its ability to relay pin distances, update them dynamically and place them alongside front-and-back green measurements gives compatible Garmin device owners more information than a standalone rangefinder normally provides.
