Sony Electronics is widening its full-frame lens lineup with the SEL100400, officially named the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS. Designed primarily for hobbyist photographers, this super-telephoto zoom combines a long focal range with a surprisingly portable 654g body. It targets people who want to photograph birds, sports, aircraft, trains, wildlife, and distant landscapes without carrying a bulky professional lens.
A Portable Route to 400mm Photography
The biggest attraction is the balance between reach and mobility. Covering 100mm to 400mm, the lens lets photographers move from relatively wide environmental compositions to tightly framed distant subjects without changing lenses. Its compact 654g design should also make handheld framing less tiring during long walks, sporting events, or outdoor observation sessions.
Super-telephoto lenses can also visually compress the distance between a subject and its background. This gives landscape and urban photographers another creative tool beyond simply making distant objects look larger. Add the optional SEL20TC 2x teleconverter, and the lens can reach 800mm on a full-frame camera or an equivalent field of view of up to 1,200mm when combined with APS-C crop mode.
Optical Design Focused on Clear Detail
Inside the lens, Sony uses two ED glass elements and two aspherical elements. The combination is intended to control chromatic aberration and geometric distortion throughout the zoom range. A nine-blade circular aperture and optimized spherical aberration also help produce smoother background blur, although the variable F5.6-8 maximum aperture means this lens favors portability over extreme low-light performance.
The SEL100400 is not limited to faraway subjects. It focuses as close as 1.13 meters at the wide end and 0.86 meters at 400mm, while offering up to 0.41x magnification. That capability should be useful for flowers, insects, and smaller details when photographers want telephoto-style isolation without carrying a separate close-up lens.
Autofocus and Stabilization for Moving Subjects
A linear motor provides fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus for subjects that rarely stay still. The lens supports continuous shooting with AF and AE tracking at up to approximately 120 frames per second when paired with the Sony Alpha 9 III, although actual speed can vary with camera settings and shooting conditions.
Built-in Optical SteadyShot helps reduce visible camera shake, which becomes increasingly noticeable at longer focal lengths. On compatible cameras, the lens can also coordinate with in-body stabilization and Active Mode. Video users receive support for breathing compensation, helping reduce changes in the angle of view as focus shifts during recording.
Controls, Outdoor Protection, and Availability
Physical controls include a customizable focus-hold button, focus mode and range controls, and a zoom-lock switch. These additions make it easier to adapt the lens to different subjects while helping prevent the barrel from extending during transport. Its dust-and-moisture-resistant construction adds reassurance outdoors, although Sony does not claim complete protection against dust or water.
The included hood helps manage flare and ghosting when shooting toward bright light. Overall, the SEL100400 looks like a practical middle ground for enthusiasts who value reach, stabilization, and manageable weight more than a wide constant aperture. Sony Electronics plans to release the lens in September 2026 for $849.99 in the United States and $1,079.99 in Canada.
