Google released its iPhone version of Google Talk recently. To start, what you need is logon to www.google.com/talk from iPhone browser.
One thing to note is that you have to stay on the page to chat. If you open a new page, you will become ‘Unavailable’, and will get the messages only when you log in to the page again
